What is an Ohana?

Traditionally, Ohana is the Hawaiian word for “family”, and is often used in reference to the extended family or clan. In this case, it means all of us who share kenpo familial roots, tracing back to the influence of the Hawaiian Islands.

It has also been used to refer to a gathering of that clan; a bringing together of members from different lineages to share with each other, compete with each other in friendly exchange, to learn from each other, and benefit the paths each of us walk as martial artists.

This Kekoa Ohana is a gathering of kenpoists, coming together for the purpose of enriching each other while raising awareness and funds for abused women and children.

Who can or should attend?

If you are a kenpoist – from whatever lineages – and you look forward to expanding your exposure to and knowledge of the art, you should come. If you are a martial artist who would enjoy the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest names teaching today, you should come. Regardless of your specific “brand” of kenpo, you are bound to learn many useful lessons from some of the brightest stars in kenpo/kempo.

What is “Kilohana”?

Kilohana Martial Arts Organization is an alliance of martial arts teachers and school, tracing their roots back to foundational Hawaiian martial arts, and it’s offshoots. Originally founded to maintain the standards of Danzan-Ryu Jujutsu as taught to Sig Kufferath by Henry Okazaki, the association has expanded to include professors and practitioners from a wide range of fighting arts, tracing themselves back to Pacific Rim influences. Member arts include Kempo and Kenpo; Hawaiian Lua; Kajukenbo; Filipino Martial Arts; Judo, and more.  Translated from Hawaiian, the implication of the word phrase is “best collection”, meaning a gathering of committed practitioners and instructors, dedicated to each others’ growth and fulfillment on the martial path.

What about the charities this event is designed to benefit?

A substantial percent of the net proceeds will be donated to the regional RFKC, and the Sonoma County YWCA.

The RFKC is a faith-based organization that seeks to provide positive, emotionally corrective and supportive experiences to physically, sexually, and psychologically abused children who have become wards of the State. Each year, dozens of summer camps are held, where counselors donate their time to providing a nurturing atmosphere to at-risk and troubled children; for many, it’s the first time they receive positive attention with no strings attached in their lives. Funds raised and donated go to covering the tuition of children who would otherwise not be able to go to these camps, and receive the respite and blessing of being surrounded by people intent on supporting them, rather than victimizing them.

The YWCA is an organization dedicated to supporting women throughout various states of transition. Services provided by them aid abused women in establishing stable lives, in obtaining positive support networks, and in protecting them from abusers while they heal and prepare for new lives ahead.  Each day, thousands of womens lives are improved as a result of the support offered by YWCA.

Not all people conduct themselves honorably in their relationships with women and children. However, some care enough to dedicate their lives to helping those who have been victimized by others. Here is a chance to make a difference in the life of a woman or child who needs your help.

Because Kilohana is a registered not-for-profit organization, and because a good chunk of the leftover change will be donated to the RFKC and YWCA, your tuition for the weekend may be tax deductable.
